We are closed …

“Due to the inflexibility of our overseas-based landlord and the UK’s crippling business rates we have reluctantly decided to close mmm… and glug…

“It was costing us around £100,000 a year simply to open our doors – before we bought any stock to sell, paid our employees plus other costs, such as insurance and energy.

“That, along with falling city centre footfall, delivery and parking restrictions, possible future congestion charges and a massively expanded Christmas Market, means that the numbers now simply don’t add up.

“We have spent 12 hard (but, oh so enjoyable) years bringing great ingredients, food and drink to the region.

“Without our wonderful customers, amazing producers and hard-working employees none of that would have been possible – and we are so sorry to let you all down with our decision.

“We hope to be back in the future. Until then, can we once again thank you for your wonderful support.”

Simone and Ian Clarkin

Get Funghi dried wild mushrooms at mmm… and glug…

Come and meet Get Funghi at mmm… and glug… this Saturday (2 November).

Get Funghi’s Deb Hampson and Bengt Saxmark hand-pick the best quality Porcini, Winter Chanterelle and mixed forest mushrooms in West Sweden.

They sort, slice and dry them on the same day to preserve maximum flavour.

Drying not only enhances the flavour, but also increases the shelf-life.

There is no waste – rehydrate only what you need and keep in an airtight container for another occasion.

Get Funghi’s award-winning mushrooms are perfect for risottos, soups and stews and Deb and Bengt will be sharing some great recipe ideas at mmm… and glug…

The free Get Funghi tasting is from 1pm to 4pm this Saturday (2 November) at mmm…glug…, 129 Grainger Street, Newcastle, NE1 5AE.

What to drink with Get Funghi dried mushroom dishes?

We suggest Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale.

This very popular Sam Smith’s bottle is a dry and richly flavoured ale, which nicely complements the earthiness of Get Funghi’s mushrooms.

Watch out for a non-alcoholic version of the brown ale coming very soon to mmm… and glug… too!

Enjoy great tasting food everyday with mmm… and glug…

Day of the Dead (aka Dia de los Muertos) at mmm… and glug…

Dia de los Muertos is a colourful and joyous family celebration unique to Mexico and takes place on 1st to 2nd November.

Mexican ingredients at mmm and glugIt is believed that the souls of the dead awaken and return to the living world to feast, drink, dance and play music with their loved ones who in turn treat them as honoured guests at the festivities.

Food traditionally plays a big part in the celebrations and if you are planning to recreate your own Mexican feast then we have all the genuine ingredients you need.

From fresh corn tortillas, dried chillies (including Ancho, Chipotle, Guajillo), mole paste, and tinned tomatillos, to corn husks, Masa Harina flour, refried beans, chipotle en adobo, Mexican drinking chocolate and much more.

And, if you would like some Mexican inspiration, here are a couple of recipes to whet your appetite.

Good wines to drink with Mexican food …

The spicier the food, the colder and sweeter the wine should be.

Smoother tannins, higher acidity and lower alcohol also balance well, and full flavoured reds work well with smoky chipotle based dishes.

We have chosen two wines for you to try and we are sampling these in the shop this month.

Planeta Rosé IGT Sicilia – this is a light, dry Rosé with good acidity which balances well with the spice.

Great with tacos, tostados and tamales, fish, veg and chicken dishes.

Finca Flinchman Tanguero, Mendoza Malbec – for grilled meat dishes like Carnitas and al Pastor, or dishes made with smoky earthy chilli flavours from chipotle.

Shop of the Year announced this week

mmm glug shop of the year 2018 finals

Grainger Street-based mmm… and glug… is one of just ten shops across the UK to make it to this week’s Guild of Fine Food’s 2018 Shop of the Year awards.

Judges from the guild, which recognises excellence in independent retail, recently visited the Newcastle store and carried out mystery shopping exercises, before announcing their overall winner in London this Thursday evening.

Owner Simone Clarkin, is delighted to be recognised for such a prestigious award, especially at a time when independent high street shops face pressure from supermarkets and out of town retailers.

She said: “When we originally opened our Grainger Market store back in 2008 we wanted to get people in the north east and beyond to think about what they eat and drink – and where it comes from.

“Over the past ten years, we have expanded twice within the Grainger Market and then in late 2017 into the city centre – all done during a climate of huge retail uncertainty.

“It is great to know that our efforts to provide great food and drink, and hopefully even greater customer service and advice to shoppers, has helped us reach this stage.

“We really hope that our ethos of being there to provide easy access to good food and drink to the region can help us to bring this prestigious award back the north east.

The Guild’s judges, which included Edward Berry of The Flying Fork, Stuart Gates, who has worked for both Harrods and Fortnum & Mason, award-winning retailer Tracey Colley and Georgina Mason from Gonalston Farm Shop, have rated and scored mmm… and glug… before agreeing to a winner.

This Thursday (20 September), the judging will reach an exciting finale when Simone Clarkin and others from the world of fine food gather at the Guild of Fine Food’s London base, to find out the winner of Shop of the Year 2018.

mmm… and glug… expanded its business with a move to larger headquarters in Newcastle city centre in late 2017 and plans to launch a ‘click and collect’ online shop, demo kitchen and event space in early 2019.

Earlier this year mmm… and glug… came out top in North East and Cumbria in the prestigious RateBeer.com awards.

The awards to breweries, pubs and retailers, sees beer lovers from dozens of countries rate their favourite tipples and where they buy or drink them.

The business, based in the city’s Grainger Market, has earned fame in foodie circles for its commitment to sourcing the highest quality produce from suppliers around the world.

Run by Simone and Ian Clarkin, mmm…and glug… – which started out in 2008, is now moving to a two-floor 1,500 sq ft retail unit on nearby Grainger Street.

This will allow it to have its own shop front on one of Newcastle’s busiest streets and dictate its own opening hours.

The move comes at a time of development for the business, as it introduces a ‘click and collect’ service for customers and online mail order to allow it to look at international trade.

Spanish paprika at mmm... Grainger Streetmmm…and glug…have also launched a range of its own-label spice mixes and cooking ingredients.

mmm…and glug…has been built by passionate foodies Simone and Ian, who have assembled a five-strong team who share their love of quality food and drink.

Simone’s background in sourcing fine food and wines from continental suppliers, coupled with Ian’s expertise in marketing – which has seen mmm…glug…named as one of the most influential independent businesses on Twitter – has proved a recipe for success.

Simone said: “This is a very exciting time for us, moving into our own shop on Grainger Street and having the freedom that comes with that is something we have wanted for some time.

“The Grainger Market has been a fantastic place to be, but we are delighted with the start of our new chapter.

“Our ethos is we source high-quality food and drink from independent producers wherever they are in the world, and strive to build long-term relationships with both our customers and suppliers.

“We do stock products from the North East and we source from Spain, Italy, France, America, we look across the whole world to get the quality we know our customers will want.”

Ian, who initially was ‘Saturday boy’ with mmm…glug…before joining his wife full time, said: “We have customers who come to us from as far afield as Liverpool and Manchester and even afield.

“Through the launch of online ordering in the near future we hope we will become accessible to people across the UK and even internationally.

Thomasina Miers at mmm... Grainger Street“Our customers are fantastic and are the biggest advocates of what we do.

Thomasina Miers first became aware of us when she remarked how difficult it was to find some cooking ingredients; one of our customers got in touch with her to tell her about us.

“Since then, she has mentioned us in her cookbooks and even held a book launch here.”

mmm…and glug…have been supported in its expansion by law firm Sintons, with Head of Licensing Sarah Smith and Laura Peace, Partner in the Real Estate team, both acting in the transaction.

Sarah Smith said: “Newcastle enjoys a reputation as a vibrant and diverse leisure venue which attracts people from across the whole UK.

“mmm…and glug…is another example of something special we have here which again puts the North East on a national scale.

“Its reputation for its quality and variety of produce is well known far beyond this region.

“And the platform it has created on social media has also helped it to stand out in the very competitive culinary marketplace.

“We wish Simone and Ian luck in their new home for mmm…and glug…on Grainger Street and every success as they continue to grow and develop the business.”

Newcastle food store aims to be Britain’s best

mmm glug logosA Newcastle food and drink store wants local shoppers who are shunning the supermarkets to help it carry off a top UK food award for independent retailers.

Grainger Market-based mmm… and glug… is in the running for the 2015 Farm Shop & Deli Awards and hopes that the award can come to the north east for the first time.

The store, a major supporter of small food producers both in and out of the region, has been on a mission to get more people cooking and eating since it opened six years ago.

The Farm Shop & Deli Awards recognise the very best standards in the UK’s independent, speciality retail market.

And, despite being up against delis and shops in the UK that have been established far longer, owner Simone Clarkin, 51, is determined to show that the region can compete with the whole of the country.

She said: “When we first opened mmm… and then glug… we wanted to get more local people talking about and more importantly, eating great food and drink – and not just relying on the choices supermarkets offer.

“By working with award-winning local producers such as Zen Bakers, Davenports Chocolates, Wylam Brewery, Mr Vikkis, Gilchesters and Anarchy Brewery we have helped raise the profile of the fantastic food and drink being produced in the region.

“But we also look beyond the region by aiming to supply top cooking ingredients that many of our customers and chefs say they can’t get anywhere but London or even abroad.

“We are hoping north east twitterers, food lovers, cooks and chefs can vote and see the accolade coming to the region on behalf of our great suppliers and the food-loving north east as a whole.”

Food lovers can vote for mmm… online at http://www.farmshopanddelishow.co.uk/entry/mmm-food-drink-ltd

The Awards developed from Founding Partner Olives Et Al’s Deli of the Year, saw nearly 300 entries in 2014, doubling the amount from previous year.

The overall winner will be announced at Farm Shop & Deli Show on 20 April 2015 at Birmingham’s NEC.

mmm… and the recently opened glug… which stocks hundreds of craft beers, wine and ciders is based at 10-13 Grainger Arcade in the Grainger Market.

The store can be followed online at www.twitter.com/mmm_newcastle where over 16,000 followers regularly swap foodie hints, tips, recipes and recommendations.
